Alumni News:
August 19th
Ok, so I am way behind here. Got email from Angie Margolis, she seems to be loving Ithaca. She spent the summer in Maine .... ahhh the Lobsters. Big Waldo and Little Waldo spent most of the summer in Peru as did Robin Heggum. Hilary is off to Boston College this fall, with Big Waldo back at Cornel. Saw Makiko this summer. She did some cox/coaching for the Peninsula Master's Team. Ash-Lee Rud made a sculling appearance at Summer Camp one day. She is looking FABULOUS as usual. Got some emails from Chris Peterson, Lindsay J and Beckina .... all seem to be doing well. Chris and Becky are missing the rowing scene. Lindsay is having a great time at St. Mary's. Good Luck this year Lindsay J. Meave Fallon just got back from 4 weeks in Ghana, Africa with Habitat for Humanity. Her cool pictures can be seen on snapfish. Sonia Hilton is the full-time cox for the Master women ... YEAH ! Ran into AD at Safeway in Belmont. She is doing great at Cal. She says Liz Nelson is also doing well. Received some Howdy emails from Josh Raffaelli and Nicole Olsen. Josh also ran into Sacha who is at Menlo. It's a small world afterall. I am doing work with the Cappels on the Strides for Life walk and see Jena and Marissa as well as Jess Sloan and his family. Yes, Jess has a family. Marissa just graduated from UGa with a Masters ... go Marisssa !!! Jessica Archiblad swears that this time she is really moving back to sunny California.... I am still waiting to verify. Ivo Plachy just got back from Czech Republic visiting Yvonne. He says she's doing well. YP was rooming with Sara Waters in Prague .. what lucky ducks ! I am sure there are others. Keep emailing !!!!

Nicole Olsen is back from the Far East and is training for a Marathon ... what a studmuffin ! Also, returning to the Bay Area is Sonia Hilton. Monica is hoping to catch up with her one day for lunch !

News on the street: Monica ran into Mrs. Ward, and she said that Michelle Ward is in Taiwan teaching English. Michelle is tan and loving the Far East ! Zack Abbott sent a great X-mas card. His current doctor rotation has him and the family in Virginia. The picture of the family on the card was so cute with little Alex in the middle. Steph Snaman has hit celebrity status. Steph graces the cover of the SDSU recruiting guidebook and inside is some great pictures of Ms. Snaman rowing her favorite seat: STROKE !! Oh YEAH ! Back in control ! Hilary Waldo was in contact with Shelly Milam over the holidays and she loves UCSD. Hi SHELLY ! Also, news from Robin Heggum (aka The Source), Nicole Olsen is also somewhere in the Far East, Singapore maybe, doing some interning with her class. Also seen over the holidays, was Barb Cappel. She is a regular at Prime Time in Burligame and Meave and Barb are almost workout buddies ! Roman and Yvonne Plachy were home for the holidays, but not too long. Monica did not have a chance to catch up with them, but according to Ivo, they are both doing great !
November 11th
From Seattle: The Head of the Lake in Seattle proved to be a GREAT reunion site. Michelle Morris was spotted rowing in the WSU WJV8. Not bad for a little freshmen who was in the 3V8 the week before. Coaches at WSU say Michelle is doing great. UCDavis was a new team in Seattle but their coxswain Katie Borg was a familiar face to all of us. Also rowing at the Lake was Meghann McLinden for UP. Meghann could not shake the rowing bug after 4 years. Good job Megs ! Somewhere on the banks, the rowers caught a glimpse of Matt and Claire Niemeyer. And finally, with a BLAST from the Past, Erin Howell came down to banks of Lake Washington. Erin looked great ! She has not changed a bit. Joe and Monica were absolutely stunned to see her. It was a wonderful surprise ! Overall, it was a beautiful weekend in Seattle. The team watched the eclipse from the top of the Space Needle on a clear night ! What more can you ask for ?
ctober 20th
The shores of the Charles River was packed with Alums left and right. John Lingbeck was out rowing with the Santa Clara Alumni Boat. On Sunday, Jessica Lee (MIT), Makiko Murakoa (Syracuse), Robin Heggum and the elusive Amanda Waldo (Cornell) were cheering for the PACJC athletes in full force. It was great catching up on old times. On Saturday, PACJC athletes were on the BU bridge watching the start, and alumnus Michelle Escoffier, recognized the new colors. Michelle, if you are out there, here we are !
Also on Saturday, the athletes and coaches sported TEAM CAPPEL t-shirts and visors. The Cappel family was in Washington DC the same weekend walking their 40 miles in honor of Dylan's fight with Colon Cancer. The athletes were approached by a number of people voicing their support. Ellen Cohn ('04) ran into a fellow who was very emotional when he spoke of Dylan. He told Ellen that the only reason that he is rowing today, is because of Dylan.
Some other late breaking alumni news: Scott Castle is working at the Marine Science Institute and thus we see him every morning. News on the street is that Sara Waters is in Prague teaching English classes and that Yvonne Plachy will be joining her soon.
At the Dylan Cappel fundraiser on September 5th, Meave, Rick and Monica ran into the Newsom family, including Dan who is now sailing ! Way to go Dan. We also chatted the night away with the Woldts. Seems that Jessica just loves Boston is living there. One trip down the Charles is all it took. :) Also in attendance with Jess Sloan with his wife and his cute son. The dinner was stocked with rowers and coaches. It was a wonderful event and a great fundraiser for the Two Day Colon Cancer Walk.
And the big drumroll ..... Meave has a new assistant coach, Gianna Benson. YEAH ! Gianna or rather, Ms. Benson is a teacher at Notre Dame High School.
June 18th
Ladies and gentlemen, Waldo has left the building ! An alumni gathering occurred at the end of the season BBQ. Spotted were Makiko, Fred, Waldo (an her new beau), Sonia, Kevin Patzelt and John Lingbeck. What a great surprise. It seemed everyone was doing great. Waldo also volunteered to be alumni coordinator. More news on that later.
This alumni section is getting an upgrade. I want to load pictures and do something different with this news section. Stay tuned ......

Hey Alums, looking for some rowing action over the summer ? Come on down to the boathouse and do alittle sculling. Contact Monica or Joe. The boathouse will be open during all the summer camps and most weekends.

More news from the racing in Sacramento. Becky Simmons was spotted stroking the WN8 for Oregon State. OSU was second in their heat and 4th in the Grand Final, just 1.3 seconds off of Univ of Washington. Great job Becky !!
May 23rd, 2003
At the 2003 PCRC's in Sacramento, the St. Mary's V4+ with Lindsay Juricich lined up next to the San Diego State V4. As Lindsay looked over, who did she see, but none other than alumnus, Steph Snaman (she's here, she's there, she's everywhere ! ). San Diego St placed first in the event, with St. Mary's in second, just 2 seconds behind. Now that was quite a race. Congrats to Lindsay and Steph !
Also seen at the end of the season banquet was Fred ! She was looking as smart as ever. She was on her way home from school and stopped by to say hi ! There are also rumors that Amanda Waldo may show up at the BBQ. I can not confirm nor deny these reports. Watch for updates !
April 5-6th. 2003
Alumni were spotted up and down the shores of Mission Bay at the San Diego Crew Classic. Sonia Hilton was rowing for Villanova in the Women's Lightweight 8+. They took second, just narrowly defeating Stanford who took 3rd. Sonia had her cheering section of Tim and Norma Hilton there as well. Justin Roberts was rowing the UC Davis Varsity 8+ boat who made the finals of the Men's Copley cup. Justin said their goal was to beat Stanford in the finals, and they did ! Way to go UCD Men ! Also from Davis, Katie Borg and they whole Borg family was there. UCD Davis Varsity Women's 8+ with Katie at the helm walked away with the Div II/III race. Looks like UCD Davis women will be making bid at another National Championship in the Div II/III race at NCAA's. Not far from Katie, was alum coach Lori Cohen, assistant coach for the UCD Women. Lori talked Meave into rowing with the UCD alums in the Women's Club race. They took 3rd in the race and 4th in the Petit Finals. Meave claims to have left a lung somewhere around the 1500 meter mark. :)
Steph Snaman, rowing at San Diego State was also in attendance at the Crew Classic. Steph is pulling her little 7:28 for 2K and helping make the SDSU boat FAAAASSSTT ! We could not find Mom and Dad Snaman, and nor did we hear Julie's traditional cheer ... YAYAYAYAYAYA ! :)
Lindsay Juricich was at her 5th crew classic in a row. She was looking sharp in her St. Mary's garb. St. Mary's has a new coach and is rebuilding their program this year. They are a young team with a bright future. Go Lindsay !
Also spotted was Ivo Plachy rowing with Redwood Creek. Dave Myhra was there with family. We looked for Lolo and Mimi, but no luck.
The week before Crew Classic, Stanford hosted the Windemere Invitational. There at the launch dock was Barbara Cappel and Joanne Newsom -- man just like old times. Larry Cappel was also there, cheering on Dylan's Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin men are currently ranked 2nd in the nation behind Cal-Berkeley. At the end of the Windmere, Barb, Joanne and Larry were sporting their new PACJC hats and visors. Ah the memories !

Dear Alumni
Thank you so much for all your letters and emails of support as well as the many donations already received. We know that many of you have many questions concerning the split of the teams and really all any of us can say is that none of us were planning on starting over this year but starting this club was the only way the coaches and administration could keep the team going on the women's side AND so far the amount of support from the alumni, parents and athletes has been amazing.
The team has incurred many new bills with the split and any support that you can find in your hearts to help with will be deeply appreciated. We know that this is not your old crew team, but we trying to make this team a community team that you can come back to and row and be proud of. A master's rowing team will be starting up this summer, July 2003, and we hope that you all come back and take a look at PACJC and become the foundation of our Master's team.
Thank you all, and please keep sending those emails,
Monica, Meave, Joe and Angela
ps. Below is a picture of Larry Kahle's second child Julia. Julia was born December 10th. What a cutie !

and more, below is a picture of Katie Borg and her WJV8 boat from NCAA Div 2 Championships, where UCDavis won both the WV8 and the WJV8, with Katie at the helm. Go KATIE !! From bow seat to cox seat to NCAA Champ ! Least we not forget the woman in yellow, Lori Cohen, ex- Novice Women's coach from 1999-2000. WE MISS YOU LORI !!
January 6th, 2003
We had a small showing at the alumni row/breakfast but those who showed up had great stories and everyone had a great time. The consensus was that to get more alums to get out of bed, we'll have to bump the time to 9 AM or later. The only fear is the later, the harder it is to get a table at Denny's !! (haha) In attendance Chris Peterson ('99) from Cal Poly, Robin Heggum ('96), Becky Simmons ('01) from Oregon State, Makiko Muroaka ('01) from Syracuse, Ad Nevado ('02) from UC Berkeley, Devin Gaffney ('02) from UC San Diego and Alex Loo ('02) from Cornell. Next Alumni Row will be held on June 14th, 2003 !
We did get an email from Angie Margolis ('02), Yvonne Plachy ('97) and Steph Snaman ('00) who could not make it and Zack Abbott who was celebrating the holidays in Oregon. We also found out that Zack is a DAD !! See pictures of the newest Abbott at http://members.cox.net/ourhaven. Congrats Zack and Alida !
